What is Tor?
Tor or The Onion Router is a open-source privacy software that enables anonymous communication and is run by volunteers around the world. Tor does no have a central sever. Tor is design to protect users privacy and security against common form of Internet surveillance.Was developed by the U.S. Navy to enable secure and private communication. Now its an open-source and developed by a non-profit organization.
To simplify things: TOR encrypts then bounces traffic 3 times to different relays each having different encrypted messages until it reaches an exit node. It was named Onion because it sheds it cryptographic information at each hop so no computer on the relay see the data passing to them in a readable form. What they do is only relay unreadable traffic until it reaches an exit node where the request is made on behalf of the client. TOR was designed to make it very difficult to trace its users.
Is Tor Secure?
Short answer YES, But generally it depends on how it is used.
To visualize things imagine TOR as invisibility cloak just like in Harry Potter. People does not see you. Even if you dance on their faces they wont have a clue BUT if you make a big enough scene or bump on them they will notice something is definitely not right. Besides if you've seen the movie they do leave a footprint on the snow.
Remember you are invisible not invisible. TOR is slower compared to other privacy tools.
